More on Lauren Burk

An arrest was made in the Lauren Burk murder case.

Courtney Larrell Lockhart, 23, of Smiths was charged with three counts of capital murder accusing him of killing Burk during a kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape.

Lockhart was arrested Friday after a car chase in Phenix City. The Associated Press reported that after his arrest, Lockhart confessed to robbing an elderly woman last week outside a Wal-Mart in Phenix City, as well as four other robberies in the area.

“We have the right individual in jail. I’m a 100 percent sure of that,” Auburn Assistant Police Chief Thomas Dawson said Saturday.

“I will tell you this. We have a lot of evidence in this case, a large amount of evidence,” Dawson said. He declined to elaborate.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones called the efforts of the multi-organizational task force dedicated to solving the case “a complete and relentless search for the truth.” Sounds about right - not only was the alleged killer apprehended in less than a week, but NASA helped them find him. That NASA.

Despite the good news that justice seems on its way, that the Burk family has at least a semblance of closure, and that folks in Auburn can breathe slightly easier, the latest twist in this tragedy is the news that Fred Phelps and his Merry Band of Demons plans on picketing not only Burks’ funeral, which will be held this afternoon in Marietta, but the Auburn University-sponsored memorial service scheduled for Monday afternoon. The front lawn of Samford Hall was the original location for the memorial service; it has since been switched (wisely) to Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

Phelps and Co’s plans for Burk’s funeral are listed on the “picket schedule” posted on their website (www.godhatesfags.com - check out the “Fresh Bread from the WBC Oven” widget — “Thank God for another Dead College Student.”), but Auburn’s memorial service is only mentioned in a “press-release.” Whether or not they show up to either is anyone’s guess.

The piece in the Opelika-Auburn News reporting on the plans listed on Phelps’ website is actually linked on www.godhatesfags.com with the following in hypertext: “See you in Georgia - you corn pone hypocrites - southern hypocrites, fag feces is your grits!”

Such wonderful people!

They are reportedly also planning on picketing slain UNC student Eve Carson’s funeral.

  • Don’t worry — Phelps won’t show. They scour the news for deaths that attract any attention, make up a reason and fire off a press release to anyone who will listen. They almost certainly have no intention of actually going. They don’t have the resources to picket every funeral they threaten, so they save it for the absolute biggest few. Doesn’t make them any less horrible, but might give you some peace of mind.
